Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-05-23
Shakr (“we”, “us”) is a professional networking app for the hospitality industry. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what we do with it. We've tried to keep it readable instead of full of legalese — if anything is unclear, email hello@shakr.bar.
What we collect
From you, when you create an account: your phone number (required for sign-in via SMS), and optionally an email address.
From you, when you create a profile: the name you go by, a handle (URL slug), an optional headline and bio, a current role and venue, a city and optional neighborhood, and optional profile + cover photos.
From your use of the app: the people you connect with, posts you create (text + optional images), invite codes you generate or scan, blocks and reports you submit. We also receive your device's Expo push token if you opt in to notifications.
Incidentally: our hosting providers (Vercel, Neon, Cloudflare) log IP addresses, user agents, and similar request metadata as part of normal server operation. We don't use this for tracking, and we don't correlate it with your profile.
What we don't collect: your contacts, your phone book, your precise location, or device identifiers for cross-app tracking. We don't use third-party advertising SDKs.
How we use it
We use what you give us to run the product: authenticate you, show your profile to people you've made it visible to, deliver connection requests, deliver push notifications you've opted into, and moderate via block + report. We don't sell your data.
Who can see what
Every profile has a visibility setting. Public profiles are findable and viewable by anyone. Connections profiles show a minimal stub (name, handle, avatar, headline, city) to non-connections; the bio and posts are visible only to people you've accepted as connections. Blocked users see nothing of you.
Connections require explicit accept on both sides, with one exception: when someone scans your invite QR, an auto-connection is created (the act of showing your QR is the consent moment). You can always disconnect or block from any profile.
Third parties we share data with
- Clerk — handles your sign-in and stores your phone number / email there. Clerk's privacy policy.
- Neon — Postgres hosting; stores your profile, connections, posts. Neon's privacy policy.
- Cloudflare R2 — image storage (avatar, cover, posts). Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Vercel — web + API hosting. Vercel's privacy policy.
- Expo — relays push notifications. Receives your device push token, not your account info. Expo's privacy policy.
Retention & deletion
We keep your data as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we soft-delete your profile (status flips to “deleted”) and remove your image assets from R2. Some backups may retain copies for up to 90 days before they roll over.
To request deletion, email hello@shakr.bar. An in-app delete-account flow is coming.
Security
Auth and session tokens are handled by Clerk. All traffic between your device and our servers is encrypted (HTTPS). We follow standard practice but no system is perfectly secure; if you spot something, please reach out.
Children
Shakr is for adults working in hospitality. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.
Changes
If this policy changes meaningfully, we'll notify users in the app before the change takes effect.
